Supertex Inc. Marl International Ltd OSRAM Future Lighting Solutions Assist Program Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
Workshop 1: 09h00 - 10h30, Tuesday 5th June HOW NOT TO DRIVE LEDs - Supertex Inc |
|
 |
This informative workshop, presented by Steve Winder of Supertex Inc, will give Conference Delegates a hands-on approach to the theory and technology involved in driving LEDs. The workshop will cover the following aspects: THEORY
- LED characteristics: Vf, If, temperature, Colour etc., series / parallel operation.
- Types of driving technology: Constant Voltage or Constant Current; Linear or Switched Mode Supplies: the benefits and advantages of each.
- Good circuit layout and decoupling techniques: How does the circuit layout and decoupling affect performance?
- Driving efficiency: What is it? What can be realistically achieved?
- Power Factor: What is it? How do we achieve a good PF?
- EMI/EMC: What is it? How can it be reduced?
PRACTICAL
This hands-on session will demonstrate to Delegates how to drive LEDs using example driver demo-boards, including the effects of component choice, changing values as well as optimizing for input or out put, efficiency and temperature.
Workshop 2: 10h30 - 12h00, Tuesday, 5th June LIGHTING WITH LEDs! EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION? - Marl International Ltd |
|
 |
The advent of High Brightness LEDs has offered lighting engineers, designers and companies new tools in providing innovative lighting fixtures and designs. This workshop is dedicated to demonstrating to the lighting community that LEDs are not revolutionary as claimed, but are simply a continuation of the evolution of high efficiency lighting. The workshop will discuss how LEDs are evolving as a new light source for lighting applications with increased lumen maintenance, higher efficiencies and improved quality of light to truly enable future lighting designers.
Workshop 3: 12h30 - 14h00 Tuesday, 5th June USING LED MODULES - OSRAM |
|
|
This workshop will provide practical information about the major issues frequently encountered when designing LED applications or luminaries. Elements covered will include thermal management, optical design and electronic aspects.
Workshop 4: 14h00 - 15h30, Tuesday, 5th June THE CONCEPT OF USABLE LIGHT WITH HIGH POWER LEDs - Future Lighting Solutions |
|
|
This workshop will guide the participant through a holistic view of technology solutions for developing high-efficiency lighting fixtures. The key success factors in determining the usable light provided from either a single LED or an array of high power LEDs will be explained. By the end of the workshop you will be able to determine the best LED solutions covering lighting design flexibility, cost and performance optimisation
15h30 - 17h30, Tuesday, 5th June Create Meaningful Performance Metrics for LED Systems |
|
 |
The number of LED lighting options is growing quickly, from under-cabinet lighting to recessed downlights. Consumers desire easy ways to compare the performance of similar lighting products, regardless of the light source inside. Yet, two barriers exist to the ultimate goal of meaningful comparison: Different types of light source are not easily compared to one another, especially LEDs to traditional lamps; and light source performance changes when a lamp is integrated into a luminaire. These facts necessitate fixture-based methods for testing and reporting lighting fixture performance.
This seminar, presented by N. Narendran of the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will help the audience to understand:
- The current state of LED technology
- Issues related to the reliable performance of LED components and systems
- Why there is a need for technology-independent performance testing and metrics
- How best to compare lighting products for performance, regardless of the light source inside
- Recommended fixture testing methods, as outlined by ASSIST recommends
ASSIST recommends is a program of the Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies (ASSIST), a collaboration of researchers, manufacturers, and government organizations working together to identify and reduce the major technical hurdles currently facing solid-state lighting.
Workshop 5: LED LIGHTING SUMMIT Session 1: 09.30h – 12.30h Session 2: 13.00h – 16.00h Wednesday 6th June Organisers: Underwriters Laboratories Sponsors: Roal Electronics |
 |
 |
Organised by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and sponsored by Roal Electronics, the LED Lighting Summit Road Show, is a forum for discussion among key representatives in the LED technology marketplace. The use of LED technology in lighting products and signs is advancing rapidly, bringing new players into the market and a need for new and updated safety standards. The primary goal for UL and industry is to demonstrate that LED products are as safe as other lighting technologies in order to increase and simplify market acceptance and access of these pioneering products.
Key Topics of the LED LIGHTING SUMMIT are:
- Overview of the current state and the future of LED Technology and its applications
- Introduction of the new UL Outline of Investigation - UL8750 - LED Light Sources for Use in Lighting Products.
- Analysis of critical components that make up an LED system and their implications the certification process.
- Other market trends that will influence the adoption of the technology (including Energy Efficiency and other requirements for different markets)
- Provide an overview of possible applications of LEDs as a light source in lighting products
Who should attend?
The summit was organized to provide decision makers and people in other leadership positions in the lighting industry with a better understanding on the key issues that need to be considered when evaluating adoption of this technology. Our speakers will represent different segments in the LED Lighting Value chain and will share with the audience their perspective on the challenges and opportunities inherent in each level of the chain.
Attendees will include representatives of all facets of the LED products industry (component through end product), particularly lighting manufacturers, users, product specifiers, associations, and technical press.
The cost of attending this workshop is £100, including VAT. UL & Roal delegates will receive a complementary euroLED 2007 Exhibition Only Pass for free entrance to the Exhibition Area. euroLED Technical Conference Pass holders will automatically be allowed access to this additional workshop.
How to register? To register, please call the euroLED team on +44 (0)121 260 6450 or send an email to info@photonicscluster-uk.org, with the subject heading 'LED Lighting Summit'.
